Project Experience

Customized Reagent – Expedited Closure

Preparing Sites for redevelopment is a tangible benefit of the work we do. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties protects the environment, reduces blight, and takes development pressures off greenspaces and working lands. Following is an example of one such Site. AcuityES successfully prepared a former automotive fueling service station for possible retail and/or restaurant development.

Situation:

This Site operated as an automotive fueling and service station. The client needed a guaranteed maximum cost and completion date – prior to project approval – so results would be delivered in time for site redevelopment.

Contaminants of Concern:

Petroleum impacts – benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX), TPH-GRO, and methyl ted-butyl ether (MTBE).

Solution:

Three alternative remedies were offered – the following outlines the selected remedy.

  • Customized reagent was developed to address unique logistics of the site.
  • Removed 2,977 tons of soil. Disposed TPH impacted soil at an approved landfill.
  • Applied a slow-release chemical oxidizer that also contained essential nutrients to the base of the excavation to enhance microbial degradation in the capillary fringe and groundwater.
  • Completed two years of post-remediation groundwater monitoring.

Results:

Groundwater monitoring over nine quarters produced sufficient documentation to support Site closure. A restaurant or other commercial uses are now planned for future development.
